Node Toolkit: tools for Meshtastic

Vanity Identity

Search for a real X25519 identity key pair whose public key, or on Meshtastic 2.8+ the node ID, matches a pattern. Results are verified before display.

Vanity public keys and node IDs

Meshtastic firmware 2.5 introduced X25519 public-key encryption, used for encrypted direct messages and remote admin. Vanity Identity tries random key pairs until the public key, or on firmware 2.8 the node ID, matches a pattern you choose.

Use it to

  • Give a club, event or infrastructure node a key or node ID people can recognise.
  • Create a fresh identity for a node you’re setting up.

How it works

  • Each extra character makes a match rarer: up to about 64 times for a public key, depending on the character and its position, and 16 times for a hex node ID.
  • There’s no fixed end. Progress shows the chance of a match so far, not time left.
  • To use a result, enter the private key on the node with the Meshtastic app. Where to enter it depends on the app and its version.

Good to know

  • Node ID mode needs firmware 2.8 or later. On 2.7.26 the node ID doesn’t come from the key, so the pattern won’t appear.
  • Whoever has the private key can read the node’s direct messages and pose as it. Keep it to yourself.
