Sharing a node as a Meshtastic contact
A contact link (meshtastic.org/v/#…) or contact QR code adds a node to someone’s node list straight away, without waiting to hear it on the mesh. It carries the node ID, the long and short names and the public key, which their app uses to encrypt direct messages to the node.
Use it to
- Hand out your node at a meetup, or print its QR code on a sticker or a club page.
- Let a friend add your node before they’re in radio range.
How it works
- Find the node ID and public key in the Meshtastic app. Where they appear depends on the app and its version.
- Names are limited in bytes, not letters: 24 for the long name, 4 for the short name. Some emojis use all 4 short-name bytes; others are longer and don’t fit.
- Hardware model and role describe the node to whoever adds it. They don’t configure the remote node.
Good to know
- The public key must be the node’s own. With the wrong key, the node can’t read direct messages sent to it.
